Start My Motorola DEFY XT for the First Time

This document will guide you through the activation process as well as some troubleshooting tips if you receive errors during the process.  Please follow the steps below:

 

Note: You must be in a Sprint home area to perform the following steps, including Factory Resets. If you're roaming, you won't be able to activate the phone properly.

 

  1. Power on your phone by pushing the power button on the top right of our phone. Your phone will take about 2 minutes to run through the activation. You'll see various screens starting with the green Android character, then the red Motorola logo, and finally a screen that states contacting network.
  2. Once the activation process has completed, you'll see a screen that says Hands Free Activation, Device has been activated, Press OK to continue. Tap OK. If your phone says Hands Free Activation, Your activation could not be completed, Please try again later, please see below for troubleshooting tips.
  3. Your phone should say updating PRL. Once that completes tap OK.
  4. Your phone should say MDN/NAM update. Phone has been activated, reboot the phone. Tap OK.
  5. Your phone will reboot. Once it comes back up, you should see: Welcome to XT557. Touch the Android to begin.
  6. You'll have the option to set up your Google account, but if you don't want to at this point you can tap Skip. (You can always set that up later).
  7. The next screen is Use Google location. This is a notice about using GPS to use your location for apps and Google search. You can uncheck the boxes if you do not wish to use these features.
  8. Tap Next.
  9. You'll now be taken to the Home screen.
  10. Drag your finger down from the top of the screen and tap Motorola Software Update Policy.
  11. You'll see a screen that says, Automatic Software Updates. This is from Motorola stating they will update the software automatically. Tap OK.
  12. Now you can set up your first WiFi network. For instructions please see this document: How to connect to a WiFi network for Motorola DEFY XT
  13. Check to make sure the voicemail number listed under Voicemail Settings is set to 877-912-1832. For instructions on how to verify your voicemail number please see I can't access my voicemail for Motorola DEFY XT

Troubleshooting Tips

 

If your phone stated that your activation could not be completed, please follow the below steps:

 

  1. Tap OK to dismiss the message.
  2. Pressicon_home2.pngHome.
  3. Pressicon_menu.pngMenu.
  4. Tap Settings.
  5. Tap Wireless and networks.
  6. Uncheck the box next to WiFi to turn off WiFi.
  7. Tap Mobile networks.
  8. Make sure that both Data enabled and Data roaming is checked.
  9. Network Mode needs to be CDMA / EvDo auto.
  10. System select needs to be Automatic.
  11. Pressicon_home2.pngHome.
  12. Pressicon_menu.pngMenu.
  13. Tap Settings.
  14. Scroll down and tap About phone.
  15. Tap Phone updates.
  16. Tap Update profile.
  17. You should see: The profile update has completed. Tap OK.
  18. You should see: MDN/NAM update. Phone has been activated, reboot the phone. Tap OK.
  19. Your phone will reboot. Once it comes back up, you should see: Welcome to XT557 (If you don't, skip to step 23). Touch the Android to begin.
  20. You'll have the option to set up your Google account, but if you don't want to at this point you can tap Skip. (You can always set that up later).
  21. The next screen is Use Google location. This is a notice about using GPS to use your location for apps and Google search. You can uncheck the boxes if you do not wish to use these features.
  22. Tap Next.
  23. You'll now be taken to the Home screen.
  24. Drag your finger down from the top of the screen and tap Motorola Software Update Policy.
  25. You'll see a screen that says, Automatic Software Updates. This is from Motorola stating they will update the software automatically. Tap OK.
  26. Now you can set up your first WiFi network. For instructions please see this document: Connect to your first WiFi network for Motorola DEFY XT

 

If you receive an error (ex. error 6305), tap OK and follow one of the below scenarios based on what you see:

 

If you see: MDN/NAM update. Phone has been activated, reboot the phone:

 

  1. Tap OK.
  2. Your phone will reboot. Once it comes back up, you should see: Welcome to XT557 (If you don't, skip to step 6). Touch the Android to begin.
  3. You'll have the option to set up your Google account, but if you don't want to at this point you can tap Skip. (You can always set that up later).
  4. The next screen is Use Google location. This is a notice about using GPS to use your location for apps and Google search. You can uncheck the boxes if you do not wish to use these features.
  5. Tap Next.
  6. You'll now be taken to the Home screen. Drag your finger down from the top of the screen and tap Motorola Software Update Policy.
  7. You'll see a screen that says, Automatic Software Updates. This is from Motorola stating they will update the software automatically. Tap OK.

If you don't see: MDN/NAM update after you tap OK on the error screen:

  2. Tap the Screen Shot 2012-08-09 at 1.30.31 PM.png Phone icon.
  3. Using the Dial Pad, type ##72786#
  4. You should see: SCRTN, Tap OK. Note: This is not a factory reset.
  5. Your phone will reboot. Once it comes back up, you should see: Welcome to XT557 (If you don't, skip to step 9). Touch the Android to begin.
  6. You'll have the option to set up your Google account, but if you don't want to at this point you can tap Skip. (You can always set that up later).

  8. Tap Next.

Reset your voicemail

 

If you're having trouble accessing your voicemail, either for the first time or after a factory reset, use the instructions outlined at this document: I can't access my voicemail for Motorola DEFY XT
