It seems like the auto-import likes to also import EVERY SINGLE IMAGE FILE. Omg I've never seen so many thumbnails.

Someone in that thread also mentions Google Drive, which can be set up to automatically sync your phone's photos up to Google cloud storage (no user action required), and then you can just download them onto whatever device you want. So that's a pretty easy solution.
I use AirDroid on my phone and it works really well.
Just drag-and-drop, like as if you were moving files on a computer.
I use a program called Snappea ( SnapPea ). It is free and is a very good organizer for android phones.It will back up your picture, music, text messages and more.
