Anyone know how, if we can, send a text message with a picture that I took with my moto defy xt? There is a share option, but it seems like its only for email.
Sending pictures, audio, and video by text (MMS) has never worked on republic wireless phones. Here is their current statement:
Is MMS Available?
I worked around the issue by installing GO SMS Pro and set it as the default messaging application. It can send all sorts of files through simple SMS only.
Does this require the receiver to have GO SMS Pro to receive images sent? If so, there may be one whale of a gotcha if it is actually using SMS. How many short text messages would be needed to reconstruct even a very small picture? Find out how it does it's job, the answer may be shocking.
It works even if the other user does not have GO SMS Pro. It uploads the file/picture/audio to the GO SMS PRO servers and sends the other user a link to retrieve it. If the other user is also using GO SMS PRO it loads it as soon as they open the message.
It also works well with Google Voice even though it doesn't have MMS support either.
HI iambrent. Thanks for this great tip. Have you any issues with the app at all? Also, did the license permissions that they ask you before installing worry you at all. A lot of people have downloaded this program and is available on google play. I am thinking of downloading this app on my phone. I am assuming that you can then receive pictures as well from other people (with or without sms pro). Thanks for the info.
Great discussion and resolution.
I have had no issues at all with the app, I actually installed it as the default messenger program. I don't know of any way though that someone without the app could send you a picture since it doesn't enable MMS, it just makes a simple workaround.
I downloaded Go sms pro but am unable to send pictures with my texts. Can you please send me a step by step process on how to set it up properly. I have been trying for some time to get it done. Thanks in advance.
1) Open Go SMS Pro
2) Click the new message icon, or open an existing conversation
3) Click the share icon (it looks like GO with a hand underneath), this gives you your share options. Since the DEFY does not support MMS, do NOT choose that option.
4) Attach photo/file
This works by uploading the content to Go SMS Pro servers and sending the recipient a link to retrieve it.
Thank you for the info.
I'm trying to follow your tip, but I don;t even know what GO SMS Pro is. Where do I find that on the Defy?
Thank you for the assistance.
Download it from Google Play:
GO SMS Pro - Android Apps on Google Play
Thanks! It works for sending, but should I be able to receive as well?
Never mind- I now see the earlier discussion about the sender needing to have the app. This is a big deal for me. Might be a deal breaker.
From what i'm seeing, you wont be able to receive mms from a phone that does NOT have that program running. Apparently there are other work arounds to get MMS to work from the receiving end. I havent gotten them working yet though.
iambrent, you appear to be the workaround wizard here.
Just for clarification, could you explain to me how (and if) a GO SMS Pro user could send AND receive picture and video attachments to texts?
Thanks, much appreciated.
Long live the republic!
It IS an importamt issue since many friends send pictures from their phones to me.
Yes, they could use email. But, we should not have to use work arounds.
I'm actually quite disappointed, for I didn't know that Republic didn't handle MMS. I'm sure I'll get over it, but it's still a major buzzkill.
Especially since most iPhones now default to MMS even for short, non-media texts. I just got my phone yesterday and am really bummed that I'm not able to text with my family or GF without a third-party app... granted I already have a google voice account and it's fairly well integrated for calling and texting, but still!
So does the sender need to know that we can't receive pics via traditional text?
Dave, I got my phone last week and have text my family who has all iPhones (3, 4s, and 5). Got returned text back without issue. Good Sprint signal in the house for sure. Won't attempt pictures for sure.
hm. Maybe I need to try it again, then. I have an iPhone 3g that I was testing it with and no texts back or forth were received. my Defy would say that the send failed. The iPhone would look like it sent the message but it never was received...
And now it's working. I have no idea what was going on previously.
davejl did you port a number to your phone? if so, it can take 72 hours for texts to work.
No I have not ported my number yet. It was really soon after activating my phone, though.
Hi- I tried to port my number, but the process is asking for a pin. I don't have a pin. The instructions said that I could call my Carrier and have them set up a pin, but Verizon doesn't know what that means. Any suggestions?
Verizon PIN Number
Thanks for the prompt response. Verizon has no idea what I'm talking about in regards to a pin # and using my zip code didn't work I sent a messgae to RW's help desk and I'll see what they say.
Look at the third post in that thread about getting the PIN number from online. If you want to speak to Verizon again, ask what the "Billing Password" is for the account.
I just had my number from my Verizon account ported 2 days ago and it was easy.
I called Verizon and asked for my account number (they said not found anywhere on my phone because I was prepay). The pin # is what you sign into your account with (eg, if you lock your phone, you need the pin number to log in). Mine was a 4 digit pin.
I did the same thing with my wife's phone yesterday when porting from Verizon to a goPhone (don't laugh but she went with a gophone over RW because.......she can't text on a virtual keypad because of her nails! )
